October 20-23, 2026
Băile Tușnad, Romania
We warmly invite you the Băile Tușnad and Surroundings Ecotourism destination
The aim of the conference is to bring together a variety of views, competences and experiences from various experts from Europe and beyond, on the topic of human-large carnivores coexistence. The discussions shall foster the generation of practical and viable solutions for reducing human-wildlife conflicts in human dominated landscapes.
The conference seeks to identify the current level of knowledge regarding the management of brown bear populations across Europe, as well as best and negative practices. The interaction between key international experts and young participants is highly encouraged in order to build capacity in terms of coping with future challenges (including the ones derived from climate change).
Conference Overview
The Fifth International Conference will take place from 19–23 October 2026 in Băile Tușnad, Romania, bringing together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, students, and local stakeholders engaged in issues related to human–large carnivore coexistence. Over five days, the event combines scientific exchange, practical knowledge-sharing, field experiences, and community-oriented activities in a structured and interdisciplinary format.
The conference will open on the evening of 19 October with an informal Welcome Drink and Icebreaker, providing an opportunity for participants who have arrived in Băile Tușnad to meet, network, and prepare for the upcoming programme. The following days will feature a series of thematic sessions, including Management of Large Carnivores, Policies and Law, Science for Communication, Student Session, Coexistence Session, and Best Practices & Technology Session. These sessions aim to bridge scientific research, policy frameworks, and real-world practice.
Each day will include dedicated time slots for project presentations, workshops, or panel discussions, allowing participants to showcase ongoing initiatives and engage in collaborative dialogue. The programme also integrates experiential learning through field trips, with options such as visits to Lake Saint Anna and the Mohos peat bog, the Bálványos Spa area (tradional baths and moffettas), and Falcon Stone Nature Reserve along with other sites around Băile Tușnad.
From Tuesday to Thursday, daily poster sessions will offer additional opportunities for researchers and students to present their work in a dynamic and interactive format. Keynote speakers will have 30 minutes for presentation plus 15 minutes for questions, while short presentations will follow a 15+5 minute format.
Throughout the conference, a permanent Technology Expo will showcase tools and methods used in human–large carnivore coexistence, including GPS collars, electric fencing, and other monitoring and mitigation technologies. A photo exhibition will also run for the full duration of the event.
Social elements are integrated into the programme, with lunch and dinner provided each day, and a Gala Dinner on Thursday evening (22 October). The final day, 23 October, will focus on Science Communication, featuring presentations on photography, video, and written storytelling, followed by a film screening in the afternoon. Instead of a standard lunch, participants will enjoy a gastronomy experience, highlighting products from local producers as part of a curated tasting journey.
Overall, the conference is designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, strengthen international networks, and contribute to sustainable coexistence strategies between humans and large carnivores across Europe.
Please complete your pre-registration as an expression of interest so that we can estimate the number of participants. This will help us appropriately scale and plan the event.
